2.1 UCAS

Registering with UCAS

In this image you can see that I have successfully performed the first stage of registering an account on UCAS, the reason why I have registered for this website is because of my upcoming applications for university which will all have to be done through UCAS as it holds a large database of university courses that suit my chosen career path of being a concept artist, after receiving my personal identification number and securing all of my newly created login details within my notes I can now move onto listing all my personal information so that whoever views my application will be able to see who I am and what qualifications I have achieved.

Information and Personal Details

In this stage of setting up my UCAS account I have listed all of my personal information with details such as my address so that I can be contacted as well as the rest of my contact details that consist of my email and mobile phone number. I have also included my nationality within this section as well as my name and title so that those are contact or who contact me will be able to identify who I am so that they understand who they are communicating with and who exactly is applying for a course. Some details in this section have been left out as they do not apply such as my passport details which are irrelevant due to my permanent status in the United Kingdom.

This section includes all the additional information I have been required to list which consists of my national identity, orientation and religious beliefs which are compulsory details to include so that the University can uphold their obligations to prevent any discrimination towards students.

This image contains a list of universities that I will be applying for when the time comes, I have listed these so that those who view my UCAS profile will be able to see what university courses I am interested in as well as which university I hold the greatest interest in which in my case is Staffordshire University.

This list contains all of the qualifications I gained whilst enrolled at the The Littlehampton Academy where I achieved a number of GCSES which I have typed down with the dates of achievement and awarding body listed down alongside them. This has been done to show anyone viewing my application what qualifications I have so they can see how much I qualify to be enrolled on this course and can determine whether I am well suited or lack the qualifications necessary to continue my education at the university.

This screenshot presents my current employment status showing the center I am currently working at. Both have the same address as the previous center has recently been bought out and had its name changed to Highdown garden center to which my employment has been transferred to. This information shows the application reviewer what my skills in employment are and how they can be applied towards the course I have applied for.

In this final screenshot I have captured the slide that features a list showcasing all of my details, from this list the reviewer can see if I have any disabilities that would impede my learning process which if I did have any would need to be named so that support can be given to me, they can also see whether or not I am a UK national and now have access to all my contact details so they can communicate with me about my application.

Draft 1

Why are you applying for your chosen course(s)?

The reason why I have applied for this course is because of my passion for drawing and being creative. I have always greatly enjoyed visualising an image in my mind and being able to put it on paper and create a story, the majority of my drawings include original characters that I have created which are almost always inspired by characters, factions, and locations featured in the games that I have played. Whilst I enjoy playing many games I do sometimes try to view drawing as a game of its own as it involves patience, skill and to get drawn in you have to immerse yourself in the world you want to create in order to get good results, in a game when you get stuck you go online and search up a guide or walkthrough whilst in drawing if you find a subject to difficult to draw but wish to continue you may view an online tutorial or take tips from an artist so that you can improve your skill. When playing a game the more you play the more you understand the mechanics which leads to an improvement in your abilities, the same can be said for drawing as the more time you spend practicing and challenging yourself the more you’ll find yourself getting better results each time. This is another reason why I have chosen this course as it provides great satisfaction to be able to accurately draw a character you have visualised from either a reference or your own mind as it becomes a great reward to produce a finished piece showcasing an environment or character that looks believable, realistic and maybe even enchanting depending on the theme you have presented them in. Drawing concept art and designing characters also contains critical feedback from an audience which I enjoy receiving as each criticism, suggestion or simple feedback leads to continuous improvement which causes you to get better and better always leaving room for improvement in every design due to the nature of art which is an aspect I enjoy as this makes all art different and unique from each. When creating artwork I like my picture to be able to tell a story or connote a specific message surrounding the theme I have chosen to produce it in as my personal belief about artwork is that I think an artist shouldn’t focus on only trying to just please an audience and make their art look outstanding but instead try and have that image tell a story without words by making it clear what the character is and what they are doing and so this stands as another reason for me applying to this course as I seek to learn new skills in both traditional and digital art that will allow me to tell new stories, create realistic characters from many themes, produce mystifying and intriguing environmental pieces including locations such as forests, space, and distant worlds. My passion for art stems from my dads own interest in the area as they were the first person to introduce me to their own creations and provide me with continuous encouragement and feedback that has motivated me to pursue a further goal with my artwork and seek out a career as a concept artist.

Why does this subject interest you?

The subject of concept art greatly interests me as each image tells a story and revolves around a specific theme with the artwork being completed for an upcoming production and so viewing a finalised piece of concept art boosts my excitement as from these art pieces I am able to create a story in my mind from what the artist has depicted. My interest for this subject also stems from my own creations as I enjoy looking at artwork I have produced in the past and then evaluating it which I then follow through with creating a new art piece inspired by the one I have evaluated but with improvements to many of the features I found flaws with that were in my previous image. The interest I have for this subject can also branch out from my interest in historical events such conflict and world rectifying occurrences as even though some of these events are many years in the past it does not stop artwork from reaching them and presenting the story of what happened to an audience through the use of a single image with many of these art pieces even presenting images from the future with depictions of space ships, floating cities and various other science fiction features that the artist chooses to include.

My interest in this subject also stems from my own personal satisfaction that I get from drawing as the process of creating an art piece that tells its own story is a relaxing experience and is when I can truly focus and commit myself to performing a single task which I believe can be seen in my art work through the inclusion of a wide array of minor details that help to make the piece stand out more and easily identifiable.

One final reason as to why this subject has gained my interest is the fact that no matter how good your artwork is there remains always the room for improvement which prevents your work from being limited to a single art style as these improvements can lead to you experimenting with different art styles, themes, and pathways of art such as switching from traditional to digital. My evidence for this can be seen in my own art pieces as I have begun to experiment with different drawing techniques whilst attempting to implement a different art style around a theme that I have very little creative experience in due to my preference for differing themes. My understanding of this subject comes from my belief that every art piece should serve to tell a story regardless of its presentation as if you cannot take anything from the art then it has no purpose and loses its intriguing and mystifying nature.

Why do you think you’re suitable for the course(s)? Do you have any particular skills and experience that will help you to succeed on the course(s)?

I believe that I am suitable for this course as I am enthusiastic about being able to continuously improve my skills as possessing a deep passion for the subject matter that I like to spend a large amount of my time on and produce my own characters and potential assets mainly including weapons. A particular skill that I possess in this subject is my ability to accurately follow a reference and put my own twists and turns onto it so that I can make it my own character despite the use of a reference, with this skill I learn the fundamentals of character design and use simple shapes and techniques I used on my work produced with reference towards a new drawing that utilises those aides but no help from a reference as this helps me to use my mind in visualizing an image and learning how best to put it onto paper. The experience I have in this subject that will help me to succeed on the course is through my work produced on a games development course where I have been going down a chosen pathway for how to produce my work in which I have selected 2D Art. On this course I have used my skills and techniques to produce quality artwork that meets presentational standards most notably being my 4 art pieces created for my final major project of which all 4 revolves around the same theme “forgotten. This experience helped me to grasp an understanding on how to best present my artwork as well as how to implement colour and equipment features onto the characters body whilst maintaining correct proportions of all the limbs along with giving the character a suitable width, height and length. All of the experience and skills I have acquired over the length of my practice sessions make me suitable for this course as it shows that I am able to use what I have learned to be able to create interesting character designs as well as adapt to different art styles and experiment with different themes and production techniques whilst being able to maintain all my work to presentational standards as well as consistently hitting deadlines on time with good work to show for it.

Do your current or previous studies relate to the course(s) that you have chosen? If so, how?

My current studies hold a direct relation to this course as I am currently enrolled on a level 3 games development course in my 1st year and this course relates to the one I have chosen due to the large amount of art work I have had to produce for it as 2D art takes is one of the main focuses on this course and is the one that I have chosen as my pathway for the units we are given to work on. This relation helps to make me more suitable for the course as I already have experience in studying the subject matter and gained professional skills through producing artwork before hitting a specific deadline whilst I have been able to spend my personal time practising and taking art tips from professionals online. My current studies also relate to the course I have chosen through the presence of 2D art workshops where we have spent sessions learning new skills and how we can develop them further such as sessions focused around isometric art, proportions and pixel art. I have also previously studied level 2 digital arts where I focused on producing interesting posters such as advertisements whilst creating and editing my own videos that revolved around a specific theme, although this does not relate to the course I have chosen to apply for as much as the one I am on now it does still hold similarities as photoshop was a key application of this course with my skills in this application being transferred over onto the games development course whilst I can also say the same for illustrator as I focused on producing projects within both applications. Both of these previous and current studies are directly related to the course I have chosen to apply for which I believe makes me suitable for a place at this university.

Have you taken part in any activities that demonstrate your interest in the course?

Skills and Achievements

One of the skills that I possess which should help me on this course is my ability to remain consistent with my written as for my annotations along with evaluations, captions and summaries I am able to write an extensive amount of words containing information relevant to the subject matter and are not present in my work just for the sake of quantity as my written work explains all of what I have done along with why in great detail as to give the reader an accurate detailing of my work process that doesn’t leave out even the smallest details. This will help me on the course and in university life as it shows that I am good at explaining my working process as well as holding skills in writing where I am able to focus my mind on pinpointing the smallest details of my work in writing, this will help me explain things to people in person despite the amount of words needed to transfer that knowledge to someone else as I find it difficult to sum subject up using a minimal number of words.

Another skill I have is being able to continuously hit deadlines on time with all the work completed to presentation standards, this skill is of great assistance to me as it prevents me from falling behind on coursework and maintain my focus on the subject matter that allows me to get a headstart on other units as well as provide me time to give help to those who are in need of it.

Being able to communicate effectively with people is a skill that I believe will be extremely critical for me to have for life in university and it is one I already possess which allows me to engage in constructive conversation with people whilst also being able to introduce myself and effectively discuss a specific subject matter such as concept art or anything related towards it. This skill will help me in being able to socialise with people I have just met and shall prevent me from failing to form a relationship with the people around and will keep me on track with the course as these social skills will allow me to communicate with my tutors for feedback and any assistance that I require.

Drawing characters realistically with accurate proportions is another skill that I possess and is one of the main skills that I believe will be of the most help to me on this course as the subject I will be studying is going to focus around being able to produce artwork whilst learning more about concept art and how to further develop my skills and so being able to produce a character design that looks feasible and has accurate proportions is a great skill to have as it means that any character I draw will be easily identifiable and will not hurt anyone to look at it as the limbs and height of the character make it look as if they could be an actual person. This skill will help me with being able to produce good quality work for the course whilst remaining consistent in my workflow and ability usage.

An achievement that I am proud of is my final grade from the previous course I was enrolled on which was level 2 digital arts with my final grade being a merit. This is an achievement that means a lot to me as it shows how I can make myself dedicated towards a subject and fully commit myself to achieving the greatest score possible. This also motivated me towards pursuing my goal of enrolling on the games development course as I showed myself what I am capable of achieving when I set myself to it. This achievement also prepared for all the hard work that was to come as for to gain this score I had to push myself harder than I ever have and so this serves as a prelude to what was to come for my first year in level 3 games development.

Hobbies and Interests

My hobbies include reading, sketching, playing a multitude of games on console and PC, talking with friends, I also enjoy conducting my own personal research surrounding a subject that interests me, studying history, traveling (uncommon occurrence), watching videos online, and exploring new activities that interest me.

My hobby sketching demonstrates that I have a passion for drawing and including it as a hobby shows that it is not something that I just focus on solely for my course work but that is something I truly enjoy spending time on and developing my skills, this also shows that I have a constructive personality as those who enjoy sketching/drawing as a hobby are always looking to continuously improve their work and so this gives me a mindset that allows me to take criticism constructively and work to solve whatever it was that gained any criticism. This is also a skill that is required for the course I am applying for as I will need to be able to give and receive feedback and be open to continuous improvement for the work I produce. This skill also shows that I am always seeking to improve my abilities and produce impressive and creative artwork.

My enjoyment for conducting my own personal research around specific subjects demonstrates that I am able to gather information effectively and find enjoyment in doing so which shows I will gather large amounts of research that presents an exceptional amount of context on the subject matter that is easy to understand and take in without any difficulty. This also presents that I spend a suitable amount of time gathering research without rushing through the process and just grabbing minor articles that do not provide enough context for the viewer.

These hobbies and interests that I posses demonstrate that I am able to reach far and wide for ideas when entering the ideas generation/brainstorming phase as my interests and hobbies include studying history which enables me to effectively depict a historical setting in an art piece as well as gather research on the era that contains a large amount of context and connotes the information that I am looking to present. Having played a large amount of games created in multiple genres and located in many places across the world, universes, and worlds shows that I am open to producing artwork using any setting or genre with this also showing that through my experience in playing these games I can find inspiration from many of the titles and use them to influence my own artwork with my main motivation for art stemming from science fiction games and films as this is a genre that I believe holds no limits when it comes to producing sketches/drawings.

Work Experience

So far I have not taken part in any work experience but I have been in part time employment for over a year since 2018, this job involves me working at a garden centre where I interact with the tills and customers every weekend. Despite this job I hold bearing no similarities or relevance to my course it does include on aspect which is constant communication as I have to take questions from customers as well as explaining and show products to them whilst being able to communicate with the rest of the staff members on the same shift as I, these communication skills are relevant to the course area I am applying for as to be a concept artist you need to be able to relay information to the team you are with as well as communicate effectively and keep up to date with all relevant tasks that are ongoing.

Draft 2

In this image I am presenting the draft of my personal statement where I have spoken about myself including my interests and skills as well as the reason why I have decided to apply for my chosen courses. This personal statement is not my final draft as it can still be greatly improved to make me seem more suitable for my course and increase my chances of my application being approved and accepted by the university that I have sent my application too. Although this is just a draft this shows me what I need to improve on whilst it also gives me room to review what I have written and see if I can shorten it and make it less convoluted so that I can hit the maximum of 4000 characters whilst keeping it simple without any complex structuring so that my personal statement is easy to understand and straight to the point.

Draft 3

The course that I have chosen to apply for is one that takes my interest as it focuses on 2D art and improving your skills to a professional level which is a subject that I hold great interest in as I greatly enjoy creating characters and environments that the viewer can immerse themselves in.

My interest in this subject stems from my enjoyment of playing games that include immersive stories and characters that inspire me to create my own original characters and universes by drawing them on a computer or in a sketchbook where I can visualise my thoughts. I also find art to be inspiring as each art piece tells a story through the environment, setting, and characters that all serve to promote a certain narrative. My final interest comes from my dad’s own passion for art as he has been able to produce impressive art pieces and sketches that have inspired me to improve my skills in drawing as well as his encouragement to see how far I can push my skills in art. My interest in this subject is also reinforced by my experience from going on a course trip to Rezzed where I was able to see how concept art worked towards catching the audiences eye as many of the games had large boards featuring artwork that represented the game. I have also attended industry days at my college where we were given lectures by professionals from each sector of the industry who answered any questions we had about their profession which led to an increase in my interest.Whenever I sit down to draw I am able to focus intently on the subject and visualise exactly what I want to put on the canvas or paper in front of me. I am also able to create an art piece within a reasonable amount of time which shows that I am consistent with hitting deadlines on time with no overdue work being present. Whilst being consistent and having the ability to focus I also find working on art and graphic design to be greatly satisfying and enjoyable as putting in a lot of hours and effort into producing an art piece and then seeing it come out just as I had envisioned it is greatly rewarding. My passion shows that I will not be a distraction but will instead be focused intently on the subject and will hold great enthusiasm in furthering my skills down the line. Another reason why I am suitable for this course is my creativity as I am easily inspired by my hobbies which include reading and gaming that each give aid to my creative thought and further feed my imagination which is something that I believe is necessary to enroll on a course like this as without a creative and imaginative mindset there is no will to allow you to produce immersive artwork.

My studies are all relevant to the course I have chosen as each one has included a large focus on artwork such as digital arts being focused on film making and photography, whilst working on my current course has reignited my passion for drawing of which I have greatly improved my skills at over my time spent on this course. My current courses main relevance is due to the presence of career paths which has allowed me to focus on 2D art.

At home I view online tutorials hosted by professional artists where I learn new techniques on how to draw characters as well as how I can improve my own art style. I also use online sites where I follow through with guides on how to draw things that I need to improve in.

I am able to remain consistent with my work always being handed in on time and produced to high standards. I am also able to draw understandable and realistic projects. I remain patient and calm when it comes to drawing whilst being open to constructive criticism.

My final major project presents the best artwork I have been able to produce focused around my favourite genre. My interests include science fiction and history which greatly inspire my artwork through historical events and futuristic concepts for technology alongside existing universes created in industry.

I currently work in customer service where I have to use my skills in being calm and patient which are required to be a good artist.

After I graduate I wish to put my skills towards working in the industry for a triple A company with some of my interests being artistic positions at CD Projekt Red and Creative Assembly.
