Developed Research

 

 

Research Needs

For my research I need to gather a wide variety of sources so that I have a sufficient amount of reference material and understanding of my chosen idea that can be used to influence the development of my final idea titled “Silver Moon”. To start off my research I will be collecting 5-6 moodboards which will contain suitable images that will act as reference material for when I begin producing my ideas generation and these moodboards could focus on topics such as chaos in fantasy, order in fantasy as well as Vampire character designs, Games set in the fantasy genre as well as many other topics that I have yet to explore. After producing a series of moodboards I will then move onto gathering research focusing on films and other digital media that present the fantasy genre in a dark and harsh atmosphere as this is how I wish to present my own final product so that I can see how it is best produced and what techniques were used to convey the genre in its own way, this research would also be most helpful to me as I could find media that include similar characters such as Vampires or Witch hunters so I can see what type of personality they have and what their usual type of behavior is so that I can attempt to convey that similar appearance in my own product and fit the designs into the fantasy genre effectively, I could include films such as Lord of the Rings as well as TV series like The Witcher which is more relevant to my current project idea.

Another research need is to collect a series of images that I can use for photo bashing and reference material which are 2 crucial resources that I need to gather so I can have a suitable method of producing rough concepts for my ideas generation before moving onto the final product, the photo bashes will allow me to use existing imagery and art pieces to piece differing images together and create a character that if clipped together effectively will act as excellent reference material for my final product as it will allow me to take ideas from multiple references all pieced together into one individual image. With regular reference materials gathered such as images of 3D models or characters used in films and games or graphic novels I will be able to produce a variety of ideas for my problem solving which will allow me to produce multiple extensive concepts that will greatly influence the further development of my project.

For my research needs I also need to gather a number of books that are focused on the topic of fantasy as well as order & chaos, a location that I can gather books on this topic from is my local library which contains a large amount of books focusing on many different areas and so this establishment will allow me to gather primary research which can expand my knowledge as well as help me to add details and explain my idea more effectively than I already have, alongside gathering books I will also view a number of online videos on youtube that present specific techniques of how to create certain character design features on photoshop so that I can learn and expand my knowledge in my chosen specialism.

To finish off my research I will delve into character designs produced by professional artists and view their other works so that I can get insight into how characters in the fantasy genre are commonly produced so that I can understand the fundamentals of designing a character within this genre whilst keeping in touch with the over arching theme of order & chaos, performing this research will allow me to see what other artists have produced with the genre and take note of what techniques they have used as well view any annotations they may have provided so that I can read what their evaluations were at the time and what they thought afterwards so that I can understand how they felt about their work and what ways in which I can use it to influence my own.

 

Fantasy

Dark Fantasy Characters Mood Board

In this moodboard I have gathered a large amount of images that present characters depicted within the genre of dark fantasy, for this stage of my research I made an effort to view as many character designs as possible that are presented in a dark and realistic atmosphere that conveys a harsh setting. This moodboard was created so that I could get a grasp of how extensive the fantasy genre is for character design and it allows me to view many potential references that whilst the images themselves do not present vampires or witch hunters they are still part of the same genre and from what I see in these images will allow me to take inspiration from and implement certain features that are directly influence. I have also gathered this research as to understand the project that I am going to create then I must expand upon my current knowledge of the genre I will be using to convey the theme and so viewing designs that are not just vampires or witch hunters will allow me to see what similarities there are between characters and how their personality is often conveyed within dark fantasy. All these images serve as suitable references that can be used to inspire the development of my final product as well as what presentational techniques that it can influence.

Dark Fantasy Depictions

This video that found through my exploration of youtube defines dark fantasy despite it being rephrased as grimdark fantasy and explains the genre to the viewer so that you are given a full understanding of the subject matter and to follow on from this the video also details a number of books that are written within the sub genre of grimdark fantasy which provides me with a number of sources that I could pursue to further extend upon my existing research whilst the reason why I gathered this research is so that I have an auditory as well as visual explanation upon the genre of dark fantasy which allows me to interpret it in a similar way that most artists utilise it. This video also provides me with reading references that contain large depictions of this genre and are perfect for me to gather inspiration from so that I can use it to influence the development of my final product and produce suitable references in my ideas generation beforehand.

The next media source that I gathered to include within my research is a personal favourite of mine which is the lord of the rings trilogy that is a renowned series set within the dark fantasy genre and is the one that first got my interest into the genre due to its depiction of the world it is set in as well as the characters and features present throughout its presentation. What I like about this trilogy is how it is kept constantly within a dark atmosphere with an overarching conflict always taking place between those who inhabit the land, another appealing factor from this title is the way in which the characters are presented as no two on screen individuals look the same and are always shown bearing unique outfits with their own personalities reflecting off of them and despite the lack of vampires and beast hunters this fantasy universe can still greatly influence the development of my product through the art style that has been used to produce the film series whilst the characters who have been included can serve as suitable references that I can use to develop my own designs and manipulate/convert them to serve the purpose of my project taking place of the character designs that I have outline within my proposal. The reason why I  chose to include this source within my research is due to its highly rated portrayal of the dark fantasy sub genre as well as the environments and characters it has generated which I can use to develop my own concepts from.

The next film to be included within my research is the first movie in the Narnia series which presents a vibrant and imaginative fantasy world that enraptures the viewer and draws them into world that is presented within the film. Despite the film not including the 2 character concepts that I will be designing it does still include many interesting variants of characters and fantasy creatures such as specific types of monsters which I could take inspiration from to influence the development of the vampire character designed that I have outline within my proposal. The reason why I have included this film within my research is because of its setting in the fantasy genre as well as the unique story line that it depicts for the viewer to see, I have also watched this film myself and have spotted many characters that could be used as suitable reference material. Overall this films contents can be used to help me develop my final product so it fits in suitably with the fantasy genre whilst keeping in line with the theme with a tone of a grim dark atmosphere.

 

Dark Fantasy Games

The game that I have chosen to start off this next phase of my research is bloodborne, this is a title set within the dark fantasy genre and has you the main character serve as a beast slayer whilst attempting to unravel the mysteries within the city that has been left to decay by a disease creating the mixture of order and chaos that is seen throughout the game. The reason why I have included this title within my research is due to its presence within the fantasy genre and its unique way of presenting the genre in a grim dark fashion as all the monster and character designs are presented in creative and imaginative ways whilst maintaining a dark and harsh overtone. The sources I can take from this game to inspire the production of my final product are the many character designs that are present throughout the title such as the beasts you encounter as well as your own person who wears a unique monster slaying outfit that fits in with what I have outline within my proposal and so the materials in this game will give me many special and detailed references that I could use for photobashing and influence for my upcoming ideas generation.

The next game that I have chosen to include within my research is Witcher 3 which presents an entire world built within the fantasy genre and contains all the themes that I wish to convey for this project such as Order & Chaos along with the presence of vampires and monster hunters who each convey the message of the over arching theme of the FMP. What I like about this game is the way in which it presents the world that it is depicting as the dark fantasy sub genre is presented perfectly within the environment it is set within as the world is a harsh and realistic depiction of a medieval landscape scarred by war and the chaos wrought among its lands by savage monsters with some of those being vampires that hold a heavy presence within one of the games 2 major expansions. Due to the characters this game presents I will be able to use a vast amount of these as references for my own work as the vampire concept that I have in mind is one that I have visualised in a similar style to how the vampire characters in the witcher 3 are presented whilst the witchers and witch hunters can be used to influence the development of my vampire hunter character design. Along with just influencing my character concepts the game does also include a series of posters that serve as propaganda throughout the world and so these can also be used to help me develop my own piece that serves the purpose I have laid out for it.

Character References for Photo Bashing

These images present all of the character designs produced by other artists that I will be using to create photobashes which is where I will cut these characters apart and piece them together in different styles and forms so that I can create ideas in an efficient and quick way where I will not be spending time sketching out designs as I will just be making use of the tools on photoshop to mix them together.

Primary Research – Fantasy Art Books

Diablo

The series of images above showcase images from the book titled The Art of Diablo and these are pictures that I have taken myself after taking a look at the art work present within the book and the reason why I have included this within my primary research is to have a series of references that I have gathered myself without solely relying on the internet as well as my own interest in the art presented in the book as I find it eye catching and enjoyable to look at due to the vast extent of character designs present in the book and with these images now in my possession I can use the contents of these images to progress the development of my own ideas.

Lord of the Rings

The next book that I have taken a look at presents concept art pieces created for the film titled The Lord of the Rings which happens to be apart of my favourite film series and what I found in this book includes a vast number of sketches that I have found eye catching and enjoyable to expand my knowledge of the purpose they served during the production of the film. As well as finding the containments of this book interesting it does also help me to expand upon my research as this book shows the development phase for the characters in the film with it presenting all the rough drafts and alternate appearances before coming to the final design. The lesson I can take from this book is that my work will need to go through multiple stages of rough development and decision making before I make my final choice on a concept that is most reflective of the final idea I have in mind.

Darkwatch

For my next source of primary research I have viewed the book presenting concept art produced for the game Darkwatch which once again shows the development process for all the ingame characters presenting the viewer with all of the rough sketches and earlier drafts of characters before showcasing what they were all used to influence for the final product. This research is helpful to me as it will allow me to use the development process logged by the artists in this book so that I can produce rough ideas and get a clear direction of what I want to aim my final product towards. The artwork in this book also presents an almost Gothic like art style which is one that interests me and could potentially use to inspire my upcoming ideas generation.

Avatar

The last book that I viewed which presented concept art pieces was the art of the animated avatar series which contains detailed annotations stating the decisions made throughout the process of the development of the series and what variations of characters they had to design whilst presenting all of their rough drafts and initial ideas for the series. This book presents the meticulous effort artists have to go through in order to produce a final concept as the artist is required to produce a vast extent of ideas that all amount towards developing the final product that will be used as the ultimate presentation.

 

Vampires

In my next moodboard I focused my attention on gathering a wide variety of images that present vampires in multiple forms throughout the fantasy genre. The reason why I have performed this research is so I can have numerous examples of how many different forms of vampire can be made within the genre as some types of vampire are presented as bat like creatures whilst others are sickly pale with large wings extending from their back with long claws protruding out of their finger tips with others being presented in a more elegant fashion though still remaining their intimidating features. This research will be used to help me in the development phase of this project as the references presented on the moodboard show many different variants of vampire and so with inspiration from each of these designs I can create a Vampire lord as the representative of chaos within the theme of the project.

Depictions of Vampires

Dracula

One of the most iconic and well known depictions of Vampires is the story about Count Dracula which has recently been produced into a short series by the BBC and the reason why I have chosen to include this within my research is so I can present what the most well known variant of Vampires are and how people react to them. What I like about this research is the insight it gives me into how the personality of a Vampire is usually presented as well as what their usual appearance is and so this footage will help me with the production of my final product by giving me an accurate depiction of a traditional Vampire that can be used for development in the final stage of this project.

 

Along with Dracula another prominent Vampire is the one depicted in the 1922 silent film Noseferatu which presents a Vampire with long fingers and an inhuman face with a posture that makes them seem hunchback. What I like about the research taken from this film is how the Vampire Nosferatu is depicted as in my proposal I have outlined the character design of my Vampire lord being presented with long claws at the end of their finger tips with an inhuman face that presents them in their evil form which is similar to what is seen in this silent film despite the fact that my Vampire will appear in a more fantasy like appearance rather than a Gothic presentation as seen in the silent film I have researched for this section. The posture and features present on Nosferatu can be used to further the progression of my final product as I can implement my own similar features though in a more artistic than has been done in the short film above.

 

Vampires Depicted within Games

A known title that focuses Vampires as the narrative of the game is Castlevania in which you assume control of a Vampire hunter and are coerced to battle Dracula. Taking this title as a source for my research is useful for me as it gives me a vision into how Vampires have been presented in an intelligent and Gothic fashion. With this game presenting Vampires as the main antagonist in the title I can see how they have presented the personality of these Vampires so that I can use it to influence the development of my own product as delving into how the personality is presented will inspire the implementation of certain features within my own character design.

 

Witcher 3: Blood and Wine

The next game that I have researched is a primary influence for my decision to produce this idea as it is my favourite of any fantasy titles within the game industry and includes both inspirations for the character concepts that I have outlined in my proposal. The expansion titled Blood and Wine was a dlc that focused entirely on hunting Vampires as a monster hunter that have been spreading chaos throughout the surrounding region and I included this expansion within my research due to how well Vampires have been presented in a grim dark setting as each Vampire has multiple forms that make them appear as horrific monstrosities or bat like bipedal monsters whilst also having human appearance which greatly appealed to me and is one inspiration that I believe fits in well with the order & chaos theme of the FMP. Through playing this expansion myself it has already been useful to me as I have since produced a series of rough sketches for my Vampire character design that all have been influenced by the creatures present in this fantasy title and will soon be included within my ideas generation. Despite already producing initial designs because of this expansion I can still let it influence my idea further by photo bashing images of the Vampires that appear throughout this expansion together so I can get a mixture of my own concepts that are related to the production of my final idea.

 

Skyrim: Dawnguard

For the next game I have chosen the expansion for the game Skyrim titled Dawnguard which like the previous production focuses on the inclusion of Vampire lords within the ingame universe. What I like about this expansion is how it conveys the Vampires presence within the lore of the game utilising the theme of order & chaos to give the Vampires an impactful purpose within the narrative. As well as the way in which they are presented within the story another factor of the Vampires that are present within this title that appeals to me is the appearance that they have been given as the detail present on their outfits and proportions has been a key inspiration for the development of my initial idea in the previous section of the project and now following on from that it will be heavily inspired by the character present within this expansion as I will be using the assets available within this title to serve as references that will influence my development.

 

 

 

 

Vampire Hunter

The secondary character design that I will be producing alongside my Vampire will be the member of the religious order that is focused on hunting them down and is the representative of order within my project. What I have in mind for this design is similar to what is seen on the images I have gathered for this mood board as I wish to present my character design in the possession of multiple swords along with a leather jacket and a hat with a brim running round the edge over it. These images will be useful for the development of my final product as I can create many initial rough drafts of my design using inspiration I have gained from viewing these images with these drafts then serving as the influence for the final product that I will be developing.  Each of these images is unique and presents the character in a different art style which motivates me to produce the best work I can for reference purpose.

 

Depictions of Monster/Vampire Hunters

Van Helsing

The first film that I have chosen to include within this next section of my research is the title Van Helsing which I have included here due to the focus of its narrative directed towards the profession of monster hunting and includes a primary protagonist who is dedicated towards this role. This film felt like an appropriate inclusion for my research due to the focus of the script and although the characters are presented in a vastly different fashion than what I had I can still take inspiration from the behaviour they present as well what types of tools and equipment they utilise to aid themselves. Overall despite the differences between my proposal and this film I can still use its assets to help with the production of my own final product.

The Witcher Series (Netflix Depiction)

The next visual depiction of monster/vampire hunters from the fantasy genre that is widely renowned is the recently released Witcher series on Netflix which focuses on the narrative of a lone monster hunter who travels the continent in search of contracts that hire them to hunt down and kill the monsters that are the representation of chaos in the world that is presented. The reason why I have chosen to include this series within this phase of my research is because of the presence its main protagonist serves which is the role of a monster hunter who specialises in bringing order to regions that hire his services. What I like about this series is the personality given to the main character who is always direct and ruthless in the work they are hired to perform as well as the type of armour they choose to wear and what their appearance is as it has inspired past character designs of mine in personal work that I have produced outside of college. This series contains a wide variety of assets that could be used as references to further the progression of my development.

 

Monster Hunters in Games

The game presented in the image above has you take on the role of a monster hunter who must face and defeat a wide variety of fantasy creatures within the high fantasy genre. I chose to include this title within my developed research as this is a title that focuses entirely on hunting down and using the skills and tools available to you to defeat creatures much stronger than you are whilst taking the role as a professional monster hunter which is a character concept that will be presented as one of my own final products. This game will be useful towards the development of my final product as it presents an intriguing character design for the player as you are able to create your own appearance which has lead to an almost unlimited number of references that could potentially be utilised for my own use to take inspiration and techniques from.

Assassins Creed Odyssey

This next game that I have chosen for my research is another one that I have experience with playing and is titled Assassins Creed Odyssey which contains wide array of activities for you to take part in whilst providing you with a massive open world with every region available for the player to totally explore, the game also includes mythological beasts and a number of fantasy implements that make this game suitable for research for my final product. With the role of the main character in this game serving themselves as a mercenary I can fit this into my research on monster hunters as a number of objectives in this game require you to defeat legendary beasts and monsters that are depicted within ancient Greek mythology which can class the main character as a sort of monster hunter despite doing the minimum in this role. This title can be used to help me on my final product as it presents my project idea in a unique and intriguing due to it utilising historical time periods and events to connote the genre I am aiming to depict, the aspects of this game that interest me such as the characters, armour and weapons present in the world it has presented will be used to help me on my final product by serving as reference material and providing me with an art style that I could potentially utilise as well as take inspiration and allow them to influence the development of my concepts.

 

References for Photo Bashing

These images that I have gathered into this mood board will serve as references when I move onto developing my ideas generation as I will need to be able to produce a vast amount of character concepts in a rough style that will be able to expand my ideas before moving onto the final product. What I like about these references is how they appear somewhat casual with only a simple arsenal on them which shows they are deadly at their profession and so these are the images that I will be putting to use during the problem solving phase of my project.

 

 

 

Posters

The final concept that I will be producing as one of my 3 final products is a propaganda poster which promotes support for a religious organisation that is imposing order amongst those who take in the propaganda that persuades them to target Vampires and the reason why I have produced this research is so that I can see how propaganda posters are normally presented and how they have been used to influence mindsets in historical situations such as Communist China and the Soviet Union. Taking reference from these posters will allow me to produce a poster created in Photoshop that conveys the message I am aiming to state with this art piece.

 

Posters in Games

Red Dead Redemption 2

In the game Red Dead Redemption 2 posters are used to inform the player of existing bounties on targets that have a large sum of money on their head which you are allowed to accept and then pursue to receive the award. What I like about this poster is how direct and simple it is with the main point to get the viewer interested being the all caps and bold statement presenting the award to the player which is meant to be the first area of the wanted poster that your encounter. With Red Dead 2 being a primary influence for my current ideas of the propaganda posters I can produce this research will allow me to create a poster using the same technique which is puts the message of the poster out in straight forward manner that grasps the viewers eyes and persuades them to take in what the poster is conveying and pursue its ideals.

Witcher 3

Once again I have found suitable references from the title Witcher 3 which are presented in the form of posters that are in this case much more illustrated than what I found for Red Dead 2 as these ones serve more directly as propaganda and are attempting to paint a tyrannical ruler as an all saving deity with the posters purpose being to rally support for the ruler. What I like about this poster is the illustration that it presents as whilst complex it is also simple as one can easily see that it is attempting to promote the man sketched on the parchment along with the indecipherable slogan imprinted next to it. This poster can be used to influence my ideas generation where I will be creating a series of poster concepts serving as propaganda that aim to brainwash the viewer into pursuing the mindset laid out by the religious order.

The next game that presents a variety of posters is the stealth game title Dishonored which showcases a number of wanted posters throughout the game some of which presenting a reward for the player characters capture or death due to in game reasons. This title has been included within my research as just like the red dead 2 poster I have researched this one is also kept fairly simple and is direct to the main point of the message it is trying to convey whilst its art style draws your attention to the image of the character that is present within the box on the poster. What I can take from this poster is the technique that has been used to present it in a a simple yet sophisticated manner that appeals to a wide range of audiences and so this technique is one that I can take inspiration from for when I begin working on my problem solving.

 

Primary Research on Posters

In College Examples

These images I have taken presents posters that are presented throughout different areas of the college and each one serves as a piece of primary research due to their purpose to convey information and present upcoming events to viewers so they can inspire you to attend and gain a new skill set or appreciation. Whilst not propaganda the posters do still attempt to convey a message and influence the viewer towards a certain path as it tries to grasp their interest and draw them into an event or position they are invited to qualify for. The assistance I can gather from these examples of posters is the way in which they are presented as when I move on to my ideas generation I will need to utilise a colour scheme and an art style to feature on the poster and so these examples present to me a wide variety of references that showcase all the information I need to help inspire the development of my own series of poster  concepts that will influence the production of the final design.

This next poster that I have captured an image of presents a black and white invitation to an upcoming event and the reason why I have included this poster as an example of my research is due to the art style it uses and the way in which it is presented as the poster has an unorthodox style surrounding it such as the use of multiple fonts that make it look messy and disorganised whilst the black and white manages to keep the poster simple although still eye catching due to its dominant image. For my problem solving I could return to this image and use it as a reference to influence the way in which I develop the text I will be typing onto it alongside the colour scheme that I have yet decided on. Overall this poster will certainly influence the development of this concept down one road or another.

 

Art Styles

What I have gathered for my next moodboard is a series of images presenting a multitude of differing art styles that I have been used by a wide range of artists and the reason why I have chosen to produce this moodboard is due to my own struggle with finding an art style despite the sketches I have produced of recent. This phase of my research will of great assistance to me as I will be including character design tutorials along with speed paints, videos on developing techniques as well as viewing samples of artwork from my favourite artists. This moodboard will be able to help me with my project as it provides me with a number of images that present different outlines and styles of development which could be used to inspire my own creative thought and find an art style that suits me and works well towards the development of my final product.

 

Character Designs and Outlining/Anatomy

 

This video that I have inserted presents a short but informative video presenting a character design focused on the fantasy genre which is what I will be producing my own work in and this video though without commentary showcases an effective way of outlining and then implementing detail onto a character before adding in the finishing touches such as shading and featuring shadows on certain areas of the drawing. This video will help me greatly with the next phase of my project as it shows an easy and effective way of outlining a character that allows you to get all the proportions and stances of the limbs correct before outlining the detail and this is an area that I will need assistance in as although I can outline a character I do struggle some of the time in implementing the finishing touches and so this video will help me produce a variety of concepts that will all have a more polished appearance.

 

In this next video I have discovered a tutorial presenting a study on human figure drawing and although I am fairly confident in outlining a character I do still find some issues in the proportions of my characters especially within the initial outlines and this video presents an effective technique in sketching the human proportions and anatomy from imagination as well as showcasing them in an illustrated manner such as poses and particular stances that a human can perform. This research will be helpful to me as for my concepts I will be using an illustrated design for both and so using the figures presented in this study will allow me to get an effective posture and stance for my characters along with an illustrated presentation that will make them stand out more and appear polished with a professional art style used to create them.

 

This next video that I have viewed showcases a tutorial on how to draw armour along with the individual wearing it and it shows an effective and easy technique that allows you to draw and sketch armour with little difficulty whilst implementing a menacing atmosphere to the character. Along with just showing the simple shapes that the artist starts off the design with he also shows you how to add in the fine details and use features such as shading and shadowing to add atmosphere to the design that makes them look like a professional concept, I have also used this tutorial to further my own skills and my results from this practice session will be shown below.

The next video that I have viewed presents a quick and easy technique on how to sketch your own characters and takes you through the outlining process all the way to the end of developing a finished sketch. What I can take from this video is the technique he uses to create a pose for his design which the outline that the artist has utilised to develop a pose that allowed them to produce a sketch with correct anatomy and bodily proportions, this will help me to create a series of character concepts if I were to take inspiration from this technique and develop a number of illustrated initial designs including character turn arounds before moving to my final product.

Illustrators

In this next part of my research I have taken an image of one of my favourite artists who I follow on the online site Artstation and they are a concept artist/illustrator who has produced a wide range of captivating art work using a unique and interesting art style that they have used to create detailed and illustrated concepts that are all different from one another and each show the character performing a certain action so they are never dulled down designs, the artist also includes video footage on some of his concepts which present the work flow he has gone through to reaching that finalised design. Due to the techniques utilised by the artist I can use his work to influence my own and view their videos so I can gain a more expansive understanding on their personalised work flow.

This video presents one of the artists character design concepts and takes you through their entire process from outlining to polishing a final product presenting a unique and detailed technique.

The next artist I have chosen to include within my research is Lucas Vilaca who is a 2D artist and uses a unique style of drawing to create his artwork which can be seen featured on all of the many art pieces he has included within his portfolio and the reason why I have chosen to include his profile is due to my interest in his work as it has been produced with a very painterly texture that gives a feel of grain to the image and the detail he has implemented draws out all the important features that he wants to direct the viewers attention towards. Taking inspiration from his workflow I can influence the development of my own ideas in the problem solving phase of this final project.

This video presents a tutorial on how to create a poster using the application photoshop, this video takes  you through all the necessary steps and showcases the location of all the tools you need to utilise to produce a poster that conveys the message you are aiming to send to people. Viewing this tutorial will expand my knowledge on how best to use the tools photoshop possesses to create a poster serving as propaganda that promotes a religious order indoctrinating those who view it. This tutorial is present in my research as it provides me with the suitable knowledge I require in order to begin producing a series of initial concepts using the tools featured within this video.
