Idea 1
Specialism/Pathway – 2D Art
Project Title: Turmoil
Outline: For my first fmp idea I have reflected on the research I have gathered where I branched off of tyranny from the theme order and chaos. What I have in mind for this initial idea is to convey Order & Chaos through designing multiple 2D concepts one of which I is a riot police officer donned with a shield and baton who is also wearing a riot helmet with a screen visor who is meant to represent order and to go with this character design I will produce concept art piece showcasing a cracked wall that has been spray painted by the protesters with art work that shows the body of a man in a tuxedo suit who’s head has been replaced by a security surveillance camera in a black and white colour scheme, the wall it is posted will consist of a brick texture that will feature a large crack down the right hand corner which stretches from the top to bottom of the art piece symbolizing the chaotic environment.
To go with these 2 art pieces I will also work on producing a 2nd character design featuring a rioter who will be donning an outfit with a hood that conceals most of their head except for their eyes with a bandanna covering the bottom half of their face including their mouth. This character will feature a dark backpack on their shoulders of which the straps will be crossing over the chest of themselves, the design of the character will also feature gloves on their hands and they will be holding a fire bottle that has been lit down by their wast whilst the other hand will be gripping onto one of the straps, this character will be representing chaos within the theme due to their unruliness and anarchic nature.
What Style: The style for each of these art pieces will be done in 2D and will be created using a sketchy aesthetic that each piece I create will be presented with. This is an art style that interests me as the art work that it has been used to create is whilst simple and unpolished presents an interesting design that shows creativity whilst not being over complicated.
Colour Scheme: For each design I will be producing I have been inspired by the project theme to use a colour scheme that can be linked to it, for my character design who represents order I will use the colours black, grey and blue which is a common colour scheme those in law enforcement and so I will use these to create a design that is true to life whilst I will use lighter colours to texture the face beneath the visor and helmet. For my concept art piece I will be using a light orange texture to create the bricks with some red blended in and a cream texture used to fill in the spaces between the bricks, the sketch that I will be including with the piece will be done in black and white with the majority of the tuxedo suit consisting of black whilst the security camera will be a grey/white texture depending on the areas I fill in. For my final character design I will be using some brighter colours which reflect the turbulent nature of chaos with bits of clothing seeming to be more disorganized than other areas which I will focus on the trousers the character will be wearing.
What will I create: 2 character designs each presenting a riot cop and a protester and a concept art piece presenting a cracked brick wall that has had anti surveillance propaganda spray painted on its center.
Idea 2 – CHOSEN IDEA
Specialism/Pathway – 2D Art
Project Title: Silver Moon
Outline: For my second idea I have brought in the fantasy genre which contains many interesting ways in which order and chaos can be presented and for this idea I have thought of a number of designs with the first being an art piece presenting a character design of a Vampire lord who in this project will be the representative of chaos due to the corruption and fear they instill in the societies they dwell in, the vampire will be presented in a monster like appearance with long claws stretching out from its finger tips and large fangs protruding downwards and upwards from its mouth, the facial feature of the vampire will make it appear almost wolf like with a savage expression that will fit the Vampire into the topic of chaos suitably. With the Vampire character design I will also be producing a secondary one though instead of a vampire it will be a member of a fictional religious order that focuses on hunting down and exterminating vampires, this character will be presented wearing a green mottled cloak with a cape draping along behind him, this character will also be wearing a hat with a large rim around it that will be angled slightly over his forehead. The face of this character design will be visible and the symbol of the order they belong too will be imprinted onto the center of their cloak. He will be featured with a silver sword held in his hand stretched out to the side with his other hand looping through his belt this character concept will be created to represent order within the project theme. To finish off this project I will also be creating a propaganda poster that adds as promotion for the religious order that my secondary character belongs too, the poster will include a slogan with the symbol of the order imprinted in its center.
What Style: Although 2D art is my specialism for this idea I will be using a specific style that present my concepts in a graphical art style that presents my designs in a colourful and exciting style that draws the attention of my audience.
Colour Scheme: The colour scheme of my character designs will consist of vibrant and dark tones that present each to their own purpose such as my vampire will have a more dark appearance with the outfit they wear being a dark brown and grey with purple highlights present throughout his appearance, a light purple colour will be used for his skin colour to make him appear as his inhuman self and present how old he is whilst keeping in line with the traditional appearance of vampires in fantasy. For the assassin I will be using a colour scheme consisting of multiple tones of greens and browns for the outfit and apply a tan like texture to the face give them skin colour whilst the sword will consist of a dark handle texture with a cream coloured blade. The poster will be kept simple and will consist of a flat colour scheme that presents it clearly and cleanly to my audience.
What will I create: 2 Character designs produced in a graphical art style with 1 Vampire and 1 member of the religious order. A poster will be produced additionally that will be focused on promoting order and stability.
Idea 3
Specialism/Pathway – 2D Art/Concept Art
Project Title: Courtroom
Outline: For the last of my initial ideas I have thought of a scene that includes Order and Chaos within one scene. This idea contains the existence of an going trial of which is going haywire with the order being represented by the judge using the hammer to attempt to instill an obedient silence that will allow him to continue the hearing whilst the chaos will be depicted in the scene through the presence of a man in the courtroom punching the defendant whilst the judge is shouting order and guards are entering the door to the courtroom racing towards the chaotic brawl so they can reinstall the order of the judge. To go with this scene I will also be producing a closeup character design of the judge and his hammer who will be in a pose that will show them sitting at the front desk of the courtroom staring straight ahead in an orderly atmosphere, another concept that will be produced alongside these 2 art pieces will be a character design inspired by the symbol of blind justice statue who will represent both topics of the theme by balancing them together and will be created to appear as if they are an aged and worn out structure that seeks to lessen the intensity of both Order & Chaos.
What Style: For this initial idea I would plan to create it using an art style that would present it in a rough and sketchy way that allows it to fit into the theme as a sketchy art style can fit into the topic of chaos due to how flexible and unpolished it appears to be.
Colour Scheme: My palette scheme for this idea would consist of brown and tan which would be used for the texture of the courtroom walls whilst the judge will be present with a fairly formal colour scheme that promotes the outfit they are wearing which will consist of a black and white appearance whilst tan will be used to bring out the skin colour so that they appear more human, the tan texturing will be the same for all for the others present in the scene though some tones will be adjusted to be darker than others. The palette for the statue will be a metallic texture that will be created from multiple tones of grey and I will also utilise a variation of darker colours with brown included that will be used to create a rust texture so I can make the statue seem aged and well worn.
What will I Create: A concept art piece showcasing a courtroom and a chaotic hearing in session, close up character design of the judge sitting down at their desk and a concept of a statue inspired by the symbol of blind justice.
Initial Ideas Evaluation
For my initial ideas I at first struggled even with my research to be able to formulate a project outline and as well as just using my research I have consulted with close friends who have helped inspire my creative thought for this section of my project and although I have 3 ideas there is one that I am really keen on exploring further due to my interest in the genre I have drafted it out it in. Starting off with my initial ideas I have gone down a typical violent route which presents a draft focusing around a riot police officer and a protester who is spraying graffiti and fermenting chaos to bring down the order they disagree with and the inspiration I got from this idea is my research that I conducted into existing games such as Half Life 2 where although the revolt is more intense with it taking the form of a civil war/revolution it has does still hold plenty of references that can inspire many different interpretations of resistance against the regime and I have also been inspired to create this initial through actual ongoing events in the real world such as the Hong Kong protests in China and anti government demonstrations taking place in many authoritarian regimes around the world. Although I like this idea I do feel that it is too typical of the theme to focus around a protest and so it is one that I am holding in further consideration before progressing further towards my final idea.
For my second initial idea I have based it within a genre that I have been wanting to experiment further on with my artwork as fantasy is a setting that I have always enjoyed watching films, reading books and playing games from and I also wanted to take the theme down a unique path that is less stereotypical than going for a dystopian society or a city street ravaged by riots and so for this idea I have outlined character designs representing each topic of the theme such as vampires for chaos and members of a fictional religious order for chaos. What I like about this idea is how I can explore the theme with it due to being a unique and challenging way to present Order & Chaos through a genre that would normally not be associated with it and so my second initial idea is one that I am very to keen to explore further and should I have this idea approved it will be subject to change throughout development though it will be one that I will pursue to the best of my abilities whilst improving my art work along the way.
For the last of my initial ideas I decided to produce an outline for a fairly different concept that presents the theme of Order & Chaos in a simple yet intriguing way and so I have produced a draft presenting the idea of the creation of a court room hearing going chaotic with the topic of order represented by the judge banging his hammer against the desk and shouting order with chaos present through the form of a brawl between the defendant and the opposition taking place next to the judge. What I like about the idea is how it contains the theme of the project within a single theme and although I have produced an outline of other concepts alongside this conceptual art piece such as the symbol of blind justice it still manages to contain the theme in an intriguing manner within a single scene.
Initial Idea Comparison
Since I have been able to produce 3 initial ideas for my projects proposal there is certainly an idea that stands out as more preferable to me than the rest of them although I do view them all as favorable ideas that convey the FMPs theme in an interesting and unique way. Starting off with my first and second idea I have created a rough outline for both which presents my potential ideas for the theme and the aspects that appeal to me the most about both ideas is how I have managed to present theme such as through the order & chaos of a street engulfed in riots or a courtroom descending into chaos through a failed hearing. Both these ideas were inspired by historical events and feedback from friends who I have spoken too whilst also taking notes from the research that I have conducted prior to this. Overall despite producing these 2 ideas there is one more that acts as my 3rd idea that I prefer over the 2 others due to my confidence in the genre and interest in the outline I have produced which contains a series of character designs that I can fit into the fantasy genre whilst keeping in line with the FMP theme Order & Chaos and so this is the idea that I would most preferably like to use for my final idea so that I can develop it further and develop a series of professional art pieces surrounding it.
Final Idea
Project Title: Silver Moon
Outline: For my final idea I will be using the research and moodboards that I have gathered which hold a large number of references to inspire the design and development of the art pieces which I have in mind for my final product, the first of these ideas is to design a character turn around of a vampire who will be the representative of chaos in the project theme of order & chaos. This character will be presented wearing a dark cloak that wraps around the shoulders and drapes down their backside whilst at the waist another cape will be present which hangs down and overlaps the shoes of the vampire which will have a pointed tip at the front sole of the shoe. The vampire will be presented with a light purple/blue colour scheme which makes them look old with a sickly texture that identifies them as an inhuman character, the eyes of this vampire will be a bright blood red which will be looking directly towards the viewer. The outfit of the vampire will be a dark red with a few highlights in purple across certain areas of their armour to give them a dark appearance that presents them as a powerful individual. This design will also be presented in an illustrated pose with their left hand raise in the way it looks as if they are casting a spell with their right hand placed in a fist resting on the side of their waist. For this character design I will also be creating a turn around concept which will show the character from behind so the audience are presented with a full depiction of the vampire lord. Along with this character design I will also be producing an additional concept which will present a monster hunter who belongs to a religious order that focuses on hunting down vampires, this character design will be the representative of order in this project and will convey the theme effectively due to their stature in the project. For this character I will use the references and research to inspire the development of this concept who will be presented with wearing a brown jacket which drapes around the waist lain as ends and on the shoulders will be silver studded shoulder pads which a black engraving surrounded by a leather padding which is fixed onto the jacket they are wearing. The character will be wearing a leather hat with a large rim around the edge which will cover up part of the forehead and cast a shadow over the rest of their face though it will not be totally obscured with it still being visible to the audience. Their face will feature a large mustache which will curl off the edge of their cheeks and will be of a dark grey tone to highlight the age of the concept, upon the jacket of this character I will also be creating a the symbol of the order that they belong to which is to show that they belong to a society. The jacket of this concept will be a medium brown tone with some shadowing implemented in areas that I may have overlapping one another whilst for the face a dark tan will be used to help present the shadow partially obscuring them. As like my previous character design outline I will also be presenting this one in an illustrated pose where they will be holding a silver sword in their right hand in a way that is yet to be determined with their left hand reaching for the hilt of another blade that is attached to their back. A turnaround will also be produced for this design where the audience will be able to see both swords on their back and view a number of emblems that are engraved within the leather lining of the jacket that he is wearing. To go with these 2 character designs that I have outlined I will also be producing a different art piece in the form of a propaganda poster which will focus on promoting the religious order that the hunter belongs to and will be presented with an enlarged and more detailed emblem of the order that is already present on the character concept and the background for this poster will be a dark stone like texture that directs the focus of the viewer towards the emblem with a slogan at the top and bottom that serves to influence the viewer toward their perspective.
What Style: With 2D art being my chosen specialism for this idea I will be designing my character concepts using a graphical style that presents them in a rough and organised appearance with a sketchy presentation that gives them a unique and colourful design whilst keeping it simple and not over complicating the final design implements. The poster that I have outline will be produced using the tools featured on Photoshop that are efficient in creating promotional materials whilst digital 2D drawing will be utilised alongside this to produce and texture the emblem.
Colour Scheme: Since I have chosen to create my concepts within the fantasy genre then it would be suitable for me to use a colour palette that is commonly associated with presenting medieval and fictional characters within these 2 genres and so for the 2 character concepts that I have outlined earlier I will be using a mixture of medium and dark tones with the majority of the dark textures going towards the development of the vampire due to them representing chaos as well as their common appearance in the genre, the main outfit of the vampire will consist of dark reds and a few purple tones to help highlight them and make the concept stand out whilst purple, blue and grey tones will be utilised to create the skin texture of the vampire so that they can be presented properly within the theme. The medium colours tones that I have spoken of will be used primarily towards the development of the hunter who since they have an outfit of leather will be textured using a variety of browns with some darker tones to implement shadowing on certain areas of the design such as overlapping parts of the jacket. The swords will consist of a metallic and solid texture that will clearly present them from their perspective. The propaganda poster that I have outline alongside my character designs will be created using a dark and medium colour scheme with a series of red, brown and white tones being used to create the emblem and then a dark silvery texture to create the background whilst the text will be grey tone easily viewed by the audience.
What will I Create: For my final product I will be creating 2 character designs each a representative of order & chaos with 2 turnarounds to go with them which present them in a backwards perspective. A propaganda poster promoting the religious order that the hunter belongs too will also be created using the tools available on photoshop that will serve to influence those who view it into joining or supporting the order.
Character Design References
In this moodboard I have gathered a collection of images with each one presenting a character similar to the duo that I have outlines within this draft and these images all serve as a source of research as it gives me insight as to how these characters are commonly presented and viewed within the genre, the images located here will also serve as suitable references that I can use when producing concepts as they will inspire the flow of my work and enable to use bits of detail from them towards my own final product.
Propaganda Design Poster references
In this moodboard I have shifted my focus towards gathering images presenting a numerous amount of posters which are all directed towards propaganda purposes. These images will help me towards inspiring my own design and present many unique and dark ways of conveying a message towards a viewer with some promoting indoctrination and tyranny. What I can gain from these posters is the techniques in which they use to present their message and the style that gives it that service. Overall these posters will act as references towards my final product and will allow me a source of inspiration for when I begin producing my own product.
